My K-Drama List (2025) - Part 3
11. The Winning Try 트라이: 우리는 기적이 된다 - So so good. I've been watching reruns of past episodes. This series remind me of 'The Mighty Ducks' about an American ice hockey kids team. This K-drama about a once hopeless high school rugby team is heartwarming, funny, with endearing characters, relatable problems (underdogs punished by mean-spirited school officials, kids' ambitions vs parental pressure etc.) and issues of doping in sports. I am rooting for Hanyang High 럭비보 to win the Nationals, Coach Ga-Ram to be vindicated in the 'doping' scandal, and for Tae-Pung (if I have a teenage son, Tae-Pung will be him) to go back to Hanyang High.
post-script: Yeayyyy! My 'script' for the ending of this K-drama came close to a lot of the storylines. And my 'son' Tae-Pung realised his mistake, apologised and returned to Hanyang!
12. Beyond the Bar / Esquire 에스콰이어: 변호사를 꿈꾸는 변호사들 - Cos the cool leader of the litigation team at Yullim Law Firm acted as Player 246 (the father with a sick daughter). I thought that I am done with law and law school but this drama with a socially awkward new lawyer and the interesting cases draws me in. Besides the legal cases, this drama explores various forms of love - between parent-child, human-animals, love for someone older/younger etc. The ending is purposely left 'lingering'... for season 2, perhaps?
13. Mad Dog 매드독 - (only until Episode 8 and it's now not showing on Netflix) Cos of Yoo Ji-Tae who acted as the Professor in Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area. He leads a team that uncovers insurance fraud cases. Somehow the pacing is a little slow and I was impatient.
14. Racket Boys 라켓소년단 - spillover of The Winning Try frenzy. The pacing of the drama is slow; perhaps the countryside background is the reason for this. I almost couldn't continue but I watched all 16 seasons as the subject reminded me of my late father. Abah was a badminton player who was active in Rose Badminton Party, a leisure badminton club (he was a founding member) that participated in friendly matches in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. I guessed I could relate to this sport... though I was never encouraged to play badminton. The Winning Try wins shuttlecock down.
